The TJ Wrangler
A TJ from the Internet:
So, what is the TJ all about?
The Jeep Wrangler TJ was first introduced in Spring 1996 as the new 1997 model. Featuring a coil-spring suspension for the very first time (based on the success of the Jeep Grand Cherokee) providing better ride and handling.
I bought my 1998 TJ, “Darth” [nick supplied by my daughter], in April 1999. It is a 5-speed manual transmission, 4.0 Liter Sport, in black & tan. Currently, it stands at 171,000 miles & counting. It’s getting a little long in the tooth but runs very well.
Some of “Darth’s” other features:
These features made the TRJ more comfortable than previous models:
- Intermittent wipers
- Cruise control
- 4-wheel drive
- Factory suspension
My different top configurations:

This is “Darth” [circa 2006]:
We’ve had a lot of fun in “Darth” over the years:
In 2001, I said “enough of always going east for our vacation” – let’s go west instead. So, we put the bikini rig that you see in the picture on “Darth” to protect us from the western sun & provide a very little bit of security for our stuff. Off we went, diagonally from Houston to Carlsbad, NM avoiding the interstates. We went to Durango, CO, then to the 4 Corners area [Mesa Verde & Monument Valley], then down to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. Our route back home took us through Fort Davis – a great 2-week adventure we still talk about.
Here’s a taste of what 4-wheeling in a TJ is like!
